A 1957 autopsy specimen from a 55 year old man who collapsed in the street and was brought dead to the Bethnal Green Hospital. He had complained of pains in the chest on undertaking hard (van loading) work for about twelve months. His doctor had, after examination, diagnosed angina, detecting no physical signs. Autopsy revealed a remarkable mass of tortuous aneurysmal dilations of the arterial system at the root of the neck on the left side and over the necks of the first to third ribs. The weight of the heart was 19 ounces (about 540 gms), owing to left ventricular hypertrophy.
