An operative resection specimen from a 36 year old woman who complained of attacks of intense supra-pubic pain, constipation and a desire to defaecate. Each attack started at the end of a period and was followed by about a fortnight of freedom from symptoms. On examination there was extreme tenderness in the left iliac fossa. A barium enema revealed an obstructive lesion in the sigmoid colon. Partial colectomy was carried out and her symptoms were relieved.
