Paragonimiasis infection of the lung

Share

A 1954 autopsy specimen consisting of a slice of indurated lung showing bronchiectasis and cystic cavitation with pleural thickening from a young Korean girl with a fatal paragonimiasis infestation. Microscopy shows bronchiectasis with cavities lined by necrotic debris bordered by fibrous or fibro-cellular inflammatory tissue, including plasma cells and eosinophils with numerous paragonimiasis ova in some areas. There is oedema, partial collapse and chronic inflammatory changes in the adjacent lung parenchyma.
