Vascular Pathology: Vascular Disease: Aorta: Aortic dissection in a syphilitic aneurysm
01 August 2011
Presented by Sebastian Lucas.
An autopsy specimen from a 62 year old man, who collapsed in a cinema at 15:45 complaining of pain starting in the chest, descending to the lower back, then legs, during the hour and a half he had been sitting in the theatre. He had had no previous ill-health. Autopsy revealed a rupture of the left wall of a fusiform (syphilitic) aneurysm of the lower thoracic aorta, with dissection through the abdominal section and into the common iliac branches on each side.
